The Future of Youth Sports: High School

what a fact oceans having on your sports it's a subject that a bitter the because appointment of over 15 years and am currently part of the class action lawsuit that's going on between NFL players former NFL players
and the NFL so I've read a lot about TV I is usually appear which is traumatic brain injuries effects that happen when you get banged in the head many times and also CT which I'm sure you've seen a lot if you read anything about the subject and that is chronic traumatic and supple obviously and its are what so my former teammates have some unfortunately that have taken their lives there are probably a lot and have a that we don't know about yet and unfortunately we don't know until law until guys past even though there are some things that are going on well thought someone importers but what piqued my interest most wanna miss kellerman contacted me about speaking today was an observation I made right here on the palate campus

life all as Jonathan said I coach football here every day that I went out the practice this year we only have about thirty players give or take five on any given day but as I walked out the practice I walk by the cross country team and I thought to myself gosh there's a lotta there's a lotta kids on a cross-country team mainly the boys team in you know on it up I would say they were fifty or sixty boys out there running cross-country so I started asking myself is is all this attention being paid to concussions starting to affect what parents are encouraging their kids to do and especially here in this community that so that's a very wealthy community it's a very intelligent community it's very educated and I started think I kept asking myself you know is this a trend is is there something going on here that we're not having as many football players because of concussions and cross country which is obviously great activity great athletic activity but no don't have to worry about the contact and the concussions soul I embarked on of on a journey are I'd I started going crazy on internet probably to be totally honest spent way more time should've trying to research this but there's lots out there so these are some some highlights from summers first text I but I came across so there are forty-three states now in the US that have passed %uh legislation that says that you have to have a written note to be reinstated to participate after you've had a concussion that's great now one other problems that I came across is as you see there schools are required to have this but clubs are not ok and as alarming all that

participate in sports that the way of the future seems to be that especially if you want to be really good kids are playing in clubs so I found that to be our are a little bit about troubling spock now the snacks point in 2001 I found this in several article several studies two thousand one hundred fifty thousand diagnosed concussions in 2009 or 250,000 diagnose concussions as you see age 19 and younger I've seen some crazy numbers are there are the number seem to be all over the map I i saw as many as bike four million emergency room visits by by you 17-under that seemed a little extreme but fifth statistics seem to be the most consistent I also point out here but the sports with the highest incidents of concussions for the male football ice hockey and lacrosse wrestling soccer for females soccer across baseball now in the back your mind I want you to just remember lacrosse covers couple interesting points that I came across gonna go back to some more statistics here def and this really jumped out at me female soccer players have 40 percent more concussions than male soccer players I found that these two statistics to be very interesting female basketball players 240 percent more chance up a concussion and Mail now I will say that I do have an opinion on that but thats a conversation for another day unfortunately if you have a concussion your chance from having a second one or greater easier to have and that increases for multiple concussions and then for younger you are the longer it takes to recover guy how many how many of you would know what up the final a concussion look like it when your teammates are friends had a concussion about this website in here because I came across that and I thought it was really interesting that the CDC had done this whole heads up program I didn't know about it thing was to two and a half pages of fines you know bombing is enough so are you on consciousness arm I found to be pretty interesting okay so let's talk about how many kids your age is participate your age is and younger participate in sport are for the 2013 school year there were four half million males 3.2 million female now with I will point out this website that I got this information promised is pretty interesting if defended you all wanna go on earth the national federation all high school sports associations I got that right was loss obeyed all kinds of wall numbers anyway that's where most this come from the four most popular sport basketball soccer baseball football from what I could tell and and the calculations and all things that I read about it's about a four percent decline for those four major sports over the last four years 2008 to 2012 guy soul what I was reading and looking out like manna obscure bus of a small percentage but didn't if you if you separate them out as I do ball so high school football down 2.3 percent high school basketball down 1.8 percent baseball op .3 percent soccer up 7.4 percent which soccer's been warm waters growing sports in the US for quite a while but I found this interesting that the US Federation said that their participation in the same time period has been come stagnant are so as I said those or you know they're their current those numbers were coming negligible to me well as I was originally looking at them but there were a couple things that jumped out at me going back to my point of what I saw your this

fall cross-country soul high school cross country a sop 11 points 6 percent in the same time period 2008-2012 door five hundred more schools in that time period that were adding their statistics to the total number so don't want to turd coach Anson and said okay how many actual kids play football on how many participated in cross country well I was only seen the varsity when I was asking myself those questions in the fall but as you consider football 117 kids thats freshman team process often for something cross country at 96 which was actually more nightfall soul I told you a few minutes ago all to remember lacrosse and this is our statistic that just jumped out at me white right of the computer screen so high school lacrosse I knew was growing is op 18 points 6 percent in this 2008 to 2012 time period okay and also with 669 more schools other than that in that time period you can see the dollar so def Pop Warner looks like okay maybe it is down maybe parents are paying attention to concussions maybe not let your kids play that earlier than eight so in a two year period stone almost 10 percent I would say that's the there might be up there might be a real

correlation there little league baseball down 6.8 percent I don't think baseball has a concussion issue I don't much or ever will so I think one of the things that's affecting for a fact his lacrosse guy you can see your look ross up 158 percent nationwide all ages in this in a four year period and I found this to be interesting that it's being billed as the wall street's poor help you all get into a an Ivy League school a small I V any school school where they've been playing lacrosse for a million years ok I and our people coming out of college standout does GreatSchools are being recruited Wall Street all because our competitor people there there's more people and they've done well okay this is an interesting study that I found by rameriz college and its be all I'm gonna goal faster through it but to my point of the Palo Alto community in the demographics look at people who made fifty thousand dollars or more sixty-some percent um them said they heard a lot about the concussion issue try those who made less than fifty thousand dollars per year forty-some percent so they heard a great deal about soul education there's there are some big numbers there as well are to my point again about the demographics so in conclusion the big four yes they're down 4 percent I don't think it's all concussions arm as you see from 007 a way to work thirty-some sport in 2012-2013 were 48 sports that were that were given statistics on this website I think that the yes concussions as is a little bit of it I think the early focus the you know the pressured up to have to compete in one sport is hurting all sports remembers what about the things for you all to do besides sports I mean look at look at this great group that put on the Stockton today you know all the athletes I don't know lot but there's lots of other things for you all to do all besides court of my pally operation I've talked about it quite a bit already the cross-country on this National Federation website cross-country jumped two spots and popularity in this away to 2012 time pure I found that to be interesting i think is a demographic subsidy that we live in concussions have a small fact now despite a long piece I had to throw this in there because it was it again jumped out the page on allman so title on hopefully most you know this is this is again a subject for another day female since June of 1972 female

participation in high school sports has jumped and times from 300,000 3.2 million and males has only increased 18 percent I found it to be staggering that up like assert that the subject for a whole nother that and

for you all there's 108 out there pawns if you are interested in the subject there's lot today to look at water filter through but I still think that we need another five to 10 years to really see via fax of concussions on youth in football for sure are a new sports in general my last point is this appointment I fell for 15 years i play in college for five years appoint high school for three a point you know I for two years how many are you out here in the audience pollo contact sport I'm really where mouthpiece guy saw for 25 years I play football I I've had maybe one could not see my medical records recently I've had maybe one 42 mild concussions and I attribute it to the small fine writer okay I work for 25 years actually that's not true I work for twenty years

because when I was a freshman or the dentist at UCLA that talked me into wearing a bottom of peaceful may work developing a and you can tell that I can still talk with them right talk a lotta guys and we're the mouthpiece doesn't necessarily protect your mouth the mouthpiece protection a brain because when you get here the vibrations get absorbed in this mouthpiece and they don't go up in your brain saw make major parents take you down if you don't wear a mouthpiece have one fitted it work miracles it was a savior for me and if there's anything that I did here today that's hopefully convince you to go on have one made and where thank you very much for him
